FR

ENG

Raddar is a bilingual research journal FR & ENG.

Conceived between Switzerland and France, and published by mudac - Museum of Design and Contemporary Applied Arts, Lausanne - and T&P Publishing (Paris), RADDAR wishes to promote dialogue between French-speaking research and the rest of the linguistic areas.

It has an European scientific committee, made up of museum curators and academics (see list below) and an editorial board (mudac + T&P) which have a scientific director for each issue.

The journal organizes non-anonymous peer review (committee members and specialists if the subject requires it).

RADDAR is particularly attentive to young and emerging researchers in order to encourage and enable challenging research.

FR—RADDAR#4

False materials, false needs, false nature... The fourth issue of the design research review RADDAR invites practitioners to explain their relationship to falsification and the fabrication of reality. But how can we approach the question of the false in design without directly assigning a negative value to subterfuge and manipulation? Where can we get out of the binary categorisations that oppose rational scientific knowledge and fantastical beliefs?

FR—RADDAR#3

From universalism to colonial politics, from a close observation of co-something-is-going-to-change approaches to the exotic and exploitative observations of designers themselves, the articles in this issue of RADDAR share a critical stance in their examination, from specific angles and subjects, that also avoid taking a traditional approach and shed light on some underlying aspects of it. They enable us to see fundamental differences in the corpus, which aim to compare and contrast, and bring into dialogue. Encompassing historical Indochina, contemporary Lebanon, American odysseys and African approaches, inclusive imaginary typographics and multinational practices… RADDAR 3 invites new readerships and opens up other dimensions to rapidly be studied within the scope of this journal.

FR — RADDAR#2

Sortie : septembre 2020.

ENG — RADDAR#2

RADDAR#2 focuses on the notion of interior. European researchers focus on the question of decoration but also on the profound meanings that inhabit us: historical controversies between architects and designers, the utopia of the home as an autarkic unit when it is linked by technical devices to collective networks in the Netherlands, the latent schizophrenia of a modern English house, the importance of women and textiles in Italy, intimacy normalized by websites and home automation devices in the Western world... If the future is interior, the articles allow new points of view on the places where we found ourselves confined for the first time in spring of 2020.

Research journal co-edited with mudac (Lausanne).

Released: September 2020.

FR — RADDAR#1

Sortie avril 2019

ENG — RADDAR#1

The journal examines the concept of function with a view to examining its contemporary meanings in the field of product design, graphic design or space and environment design, as well as placing it in a historiographical context. In what way does this term, which has had different but fundamental definitions since modernity, remain relevant today (or not), even though it has permeated the whole practice of the project and has been subject to various controversies?

RADDAR #1 : Fonction(s) / Function(s)

François Burckhardt (dir. sc.)
| Offre spéciale |

FR — PRINCIPES

ENG — STATEMENTS

RADDAR is for all those who wonder about objects, spaces, graphics, visual forms, their circulation, history, technical evolution and their different materialities. The aim is to study how design can be found in all areas of human activity, from means of transport to telecommunications channels, from high culture to pop culture, from everyday gestures to philosophical reflections or social projects. How, shaping the world, is design shaped by it? Communication, representation and education in science, politics as economy, art and industry, domestic space or common territories, design and its legible, underground or manifest dimensions have inevitably transformed societies. By approaching these different fields (industrialization, machines, visual arts, exhibitions, commerce, cinema, poetry, sciences) human activities and the status of objects as the material manifestations of a specific culture, the journal embraces the history and current events of these transformations. Each issue proposes a particular and fundamental theme of design that researchers and designers question.

PRINCIPES

PRINCIPES / STATEMENTS

FR — FONCTIONNEMENT

ENG — HOW IT WORKS

Each issue is carried by a guest expert, specialist in the subject, and accompanied by the international scientific committee. The aim is to bring together points of view from different linguistic areas: to this end, the articles are written in the original language of the author and published in French and English. The journal is also open to the collaboration of young researchers working on a particular archive or issue. Each issue contains about ten articles, with a focus on primary sources. An unpublished text is translated in French and commented on. A major cross-exchange interview allows two personalities to express themselves. Finally, a portfolio - entrusted to a graphic designer, illustrator, designer or photographer - highlights visual work close to the subject matter, and a section will report on the reference works published during the year.
